When you think about relationships, the usual images that come to mind might be cozy dinners, movie nights, or shared hobbies like cooking or hiking. But for Helena and I, our bond is forged on the open road, on trails among other places. We are both Marathoners and running isn’t just something we do—it’s an integral part of our relationship.
The Beginning of Our Running Journey
Helena and I embarked on our shared running journey about six months ago. Though we both had been long-distance runners for years, our paths didn’t cross until recently. But once they did, there was an undeniable synergy. We discovered that running together brought us closer in ways we hadn’t anticipated.
Training for marathons is a test of endurance, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Having a partner who understands the commitment, the early morning runs, the fatigue, and the highs and lows of training has been an incredible source of support. Helena and I not only share our passion for running, but we also share similar goals, which has brought us even closer.
Training Together, Growing Together
Currently, I’m training for the Chicago Marathon, which is set for October 13th, 2024. Helena is gearing up for the One City Marathon in Newport News, VA, which will take place in March 2025. Our training, work schedules and other life commitments are intense, but we make it work by supporting each other every step of the way.
Running together has given us a unique way to bond. Whether it’s pushing each other to go that extra mile or simply enjoying a peaceful run in the park, our runs are a space where we connect and grow as a couple. We’ve learned to listen to each other’s bodies, knowing when to push harder and when to ease up, a skill that translates well into other areas of our relationship.
Best Practices for Running Couples
If you’re thinking about running with your partner, there are a few best practices that Helena and I have found invaluable:
- Set Common Goals: Whether it’s completing a marathon or improving your pace, having shared goals gives you both something to work towards together.
- Support Each Other: Some days will be harder than others. On those tough days, being each other’s cheerleader makes all the difference.
- Communication is Key: Just like in any other aspect of a relationship, communication is vital. Talk about your training schedules, how you’re feeling, and any adjustments you need to make.
- Mix Up Your Training: Don’t just run together—incorporate strength training, flexibility exercises, and even some fun activities like cycling or swimming to keep things interesting.
- Prioritize Nutrition and Rest: Proper nutrition, adequate rest, and recovery are crucial. Make sure you’re fueling your bodies well and allowing time for recovery to avoid burnout or injuries.
- Celebrate Milestones: Whether it’s a new personal best or simply sticking to your training plan, celebrate the small victories together. They add up and keep the motivation high.
Running and Life: Intertwined Journeys
Our running journey is now inseparable from our life journey. The discipline, resilience, and mental fortitude that we build through running permeate other aspects of our lives. We’ve learned to tackle challenges together, both on and off the road. Our relationship is stronger because we’ve learned to pace ourselves, support each other, and keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles.
As we continue to train for our respective marathons, Helena and I look forward to the miles ahead. We’re not just running for the medals; we’re running to build a life together, one step at a time.
Running has become more than just a passion for us—it’s a way to connect, grow, and achieve our goals together. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, consider lacing up your shoes with your partner. You might just find that the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
