Running the 2023 NYC Marathon

As I write this, the exhilaration from my recent run in the 2023 New York City Marathon is still palpable. This marathon marked my sixth since embarking on my running journey six years ago and while it wasn’t a personal best, the experience was nothing short of incredible.

The Challenge and Triumph

Every marathon brings its unique challenges, and NYC was no exception. Despite rigorous training and preparation, some days just don’t align for a personal best. That was the case for me this time, but it didn’t dampen my spirits. Instead, it made crossing the finish line all the more triumphant. I learned long ago that marathon running is as much about mental strength as it is about physical endurance, and this run was a testament to that.

A Run Through The Iconic Boroughs

Running through New York City’s boroughs was like traversing a living, breathing entity. Each borough had its own unique flavor and energy. The diverse landscapes, from urban skyscrapers to quieter, tree-lined streets, offered a visual feast that made the miles pass more pleasantly. This scenic diversity is something that sets the NYC Marathon apart from others and keeps me coming back for more.

The Unforgettable NYC Crowds

What truly elevates the NYC Marathon experience is the crowd. The people of New York came out in full force, cheering, clapping, and offering words of encouragement. Their energy was infectious and gave me the boost I needed, especially during the tougher segments of the race. It’s hard to describe the feeling of being carried forward by the collective energy of thousands of strangers, all united in their support for the runners.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As I reflect on this marathon, I feel a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Gratitude for my body that carried me through, for the organizers who put together such a phenomenal event, and for the city of New York, with its unparalleled vibrancy and spirit. While I may not have achieved a new personal record, the memories and experiences I gained are invaluable.

So, thank you, NYC, for another unforgettable marathon. Thank you especially to my team UNFRGNN26.2 for the support and inspiration over the years. Thank you as well to my family and friends for your ongoing support. And a special thank you to my daughter Jennifer who has been there every step of the way from the beginning of my running journey.

NYC, your streets, your people, and your energy are unmatched. I eagerly look forward to lacing up my running shoes and hitting your pavement once again in the future. Until then, I’ll carry the spirit of this marathon with me, a reminder of the strength, resilience, and joy that running brings to my life.
